Located in Nepal's remote Trans-Himalayan Dolpo region, Shey Phoksundo National Park protects a spectacular high-altitude landscape of mountains, forests, alpine lakes, and ancient Himalayan cultures. Established in 1984, the park is Nepal's largest national park and is home to Phoksundo Lake, Shey Gompa, and numerous sacred and cultural sites.

At 3,611 m, the turquoise Phoksundo Lake, known as the Gem of Dolpo, is the centerpiece of the region. Surrounded by dramatic cliffs and the traditional village of Ringmo, the lake is Nepal's deepest lake and a Ramsar site. Its waters flow over a spectacular 167-meter waterfall, Nepal's highest.

The area is also a living center of Tibetan Buddhist and Bon traditions, with ancient monasteries, gompas, sacred landscapes, and distinctive village life. The trek offers opportunities to explore Ringmo, visit monasteries, walk through local farms, and experience the spiritual heritage of Dolpo.

The park's diverse habitats support rare wildlife, including the snow leopard, blue sheep, musk deer, Himalayan tahr, Tibetan sheep, and more than 200 species of birds. The dramatic transition from juniper forests around the lower lake to the barren high-altitude landscape above makes Phoksundo one of Nepal's most distinctive mountain environments.

Phoksundo Lake (Ringmo) is the gateway to Shey Monastery, Crystal Mountain, and the Upper Dolpo Circuit Trek.

FAQs

How long is the Phoksundo Lake Trek?

The standard itinerary presented here is 12 days, including arrival, departure, and a contingency day in Kathmandu.

Depending on flight schedules, trekking pace, acclimatization requirements, and route variations, the trek can be customized to approximately 12–18 days.

Travelers with additional time can extend the journey toward Upper Dolpo or undertake the longer Lower Dolpo Circuit.

What is the maximum altitude of the Phoksundo Lake Trek?

The highest elevation on this standard itinerary is approximately 3,612 m at Phoksundo Lake / Ringmo. Longer Upper Dolpo itineraries reach significantly higher elevations and may include high Himalayan passes.

What is altitude sickness and what are its symptoms?

Altitude sickness can occur when the body does not adapt adequately to reduced oxygen levels at higher elevations.

Possible symptoms include:

  • Headache

  • Dizziness

  • Fatigue

  • Loss of appetite

  • Nausea

  • Difficulty sleeping

  • Shortness of breath

  • Reduced energy

You should inform the management team immediately if you experience symptoms that are severe or worsening.

How can I reduce the risk of altitude sickness?

The best approach is gradual acclimatization, appropriate pacing, staying hydrated, eating regularly, and avoiding overexertion. Our itinerary includes an exploration and acclimatization day at Dunai and Phoksundo Lake, allowing trekkers time to rest and adjust to the altitude.

Is internet and mobile charging available?

Internet connectivity and electricity are limited. Barring a few places teahouses provide charging facilities, but you should carry a power bank or other backup charging solution as well. Mobile and internet coverage are limited throughout the trek.

What preparation should I make for the Phoksundo Lake Trek?

Previous high-altitude trekking experience is not essential, but good physical preparation is highly recommended.

Useful preparation includes:

  • Regular hiking

  • Stair climbing

  • Running or jogging

  • Cycling

  • Strength training

  • Weekend day hikes

  • Gradually increasing walking distance

Both physical and mental preparation are important.

Can I do the Phoksundo Lake Trek independently?

We recommend undertaking the trek with an experienced, licensed guide and through a registered trekking agency.

A guided trek provides support with route navigation, permits, accommodation, weather conditions, emergencies, and communication in this remote region.

Mountain Mandala will arrange the guide, permits, accommodation, transportation, and trekking logistics.

Do I need permits for the Phoksundo Lake Trek?

Yes. Trekkers require a Shey Phoksundo National Park entry permit, along with the applicable trekking documentation for the route.

Additional permits may be required if the itinerary enters restricted areas of Dolpo. Mountain Mandala will arrange the necessary permits and documentation before the trek.

What is the best season for the Phoksundo Lake Trek?

The most favorable trekking periods are generally March–May and September–November. Spring offers pleasant temperatures, emerging vegetation, and clear mountain views, while autumn generally provides stable weather and excellent visibility.

What weather and temperatures should I expect?

Mountain weather can change quickly.

Trekkers should expect:

  • Warm sunshine during daytime walks

  • Cool to cold evenings

  • Cold mornings around Phoksundo

  • Strong sunlight at higher elevations

  • Possible wind and sudden weather changes

We will provide you with detailed appropriate cold-weather trekking equipment that is essential.

Is travel insurance necessary?

Yes. We strongly recommend comprehensive travel insurance that covers:

  • Trekking at the maximum altitude of your itinerary

  • Emergency medical treatment

  • Emergency evacuation where available and medically necessary

  • Trip cancellation

  • Flight delays

  • Baggage loss or delay

Because Dolpo is remote, make sure your insurance specifically covers trekking at the elevations and in the regions included in your itinerary.

Is the Phoksundo Lake Trek suitable for families?

The trek can be suitable for families, but this should not be considered an easy family holiday.

The remote terrain, long walking days, basic accommodation, and limited medical facilities require careful consideration of each family member's fitness and hiking experience.

Mountain Mandala customized the itinerary to make it possible.

Do I need previous trekking experience?

Previous trekking experience is not required if you are physically fit, well prepared, and comfortable walking for several hours each day on mountain terrain.

However, previous hiking experience is beneficial.

Is there an age limit?

There is no universal age limit for the trek. Suitability depends on individual fitness, previous hiking experience, and ability to cope with remote mountain conditions.

For older trekkers and families with children, we recommend a personalized itinerary and pre-trek consultation.

Do Nepali citizens need permits for the Phoksundo Lake Trek?

Nepali travelers must also comply with the applicable national park entry, registration, and route requirements. Requirements may vary according to the specific itinerary, so Mountain Mandala will advise Nepali travelers before departure.

Visa & Arrival in Nepal

Can I get a visa on arrival?

Eligible international travelers can obtain a Nepal visa on arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport.

Visa fees and entry requirements can change, so travelers should check the latest official immigration information before travel. We will inform you about the details during the booking process.

Who will pick me up at the airport?

A Mountain Mandala representative will meet you outside the airport terminal with a company signboard and transfer you to your hotel in a private tourist vehicle.

Can I use debit or credit cards?

Debit and credit cards are widely accepted in Kathmandu and major tourist centers, but cash is essential once you travel into remote mountain regions.

We recommend withdrawing or exchanging sufficient Nepalese rupees before beginning the trek.
