Kathmandu Valley- A living Heritage

Kathmandu Valley is one of Nepal's richest cultural landscapes, shaped over centuries by trade, religion, craftsmanship and community life. The historic cities of Kathmandu, Patan and Bhaktapur, together with surrounding towns and villages, preserve heritage of temples, monasteries, palaces, courtyards and traditional architecture.

Kathmandu Valley- A living Heritage

Overview

The capital city of Nepal, Kathmandu, lies within a beautiful oval-shaped valley surrounded by forested hills and terraced agriculture. According to local legend, the valley was once a great lake until the Bodhisattva Manjushree opened a passage through the surrounding hills with his sword of wisdom, allowing the waters to drain and creating the valley we know today.

For centuries, Kathmandu has been an important crossroads between the Indian subcontinent and the Himalayan world, connecting people, cultures, ideas and trade between India, Tibet and China. This long history has helped shape the extraordinary cultural landscape that exists here today.

There is an old saying that Kathmandu has more temples than homes. It captures something essential about the valley: spirituality is not separate from everyday life. Temples, stupas, monasteries and shrines are woven into streets, courtyards and neighborhoods, while markets, workshops, festivals and family life continue around them.

The valley is home to diversity of communities and traditions. Hinduism and Buddhism have flourished creating harmony of local beliefs. The locals, known as Newa people have developed a distinctive culture expressed through language, architecture, craftsmanship, food, festivals and community life.

Within this relatively small valley are the historic cities of Kathmandu, Patan and Bhaktapur, ancient towns and villages, sacred sites, farmland, forests and hill landscapes.in Kathmandu within 20kms there are  Seven UNESCO World Heritage monument zones that reflect the valley's exceptional cultural and artistic heritage.

Yet Kathmandu is not a place to experience only through its monuments.

Walk through ancient streets and hidden courtyards. Wander through local markets. Discover architecture and craftsmanship. Visit sacred temples and monasteries. Taste traditional food. Meet the people who keep these traditions alive. Follow a festival procession, explore a village, or simply sit and watch the rhythm of the city unfold.

Beyond the city, forested hills and village trails offer another side of the valley-quieter, greener and closer to nature, with mountains on the horizon. Kathmandu welcomes you to explore and enjoy stories, skills, rituals, food, festivals, neighborhoods, workshops, farms and communities. Our Kathmandu journey invites you to slow down and experience this living culture beyond conventional sightseeing. Choose your own pace—from a day exploring the ancient heart of the valley to several days discovering its cities, sacred places, villages, crafts, food, forests and hills.
