WHAT WE DO DETAIL

Outdoor Learning Programs

Mountain Mandala brings learning beyond conventional classrooms and into Nepal’s landscapes, communities, and living cultures. Through field experiences, observation, participation, and knowledge sharing, we connect learning with real-life experiences and create opportunities to learn from local people, indigenous knowledge, and the natural environment.

Nepal as a Classroom

Nepal’s diverse landscapes, cultures, livelihoods, and traditional practices offer a rich environment for learning. Mountains, forests, farms, villages, and heritage sites become places to explore, exchange knowledge, and understand the connections between people and their environment.

We work with communities and educational institutions to create learning experiences that encourage curiosity, practical skills, cultural understanding, and a deeper appreciation of the world around us.

Our Learning Approaches

School in Nature - Outdoor Classroom

Our Summer and Winter Outdoor School programs bring students into nature and local communities through outdoor activities, field camps, and active learning modules. Designed for schools, colleges, universities, and other learning institutions, programs can range from short experiences to year-long partnerships.

Community-Based Learning

Participants learn directly from community members through conversations, observation, participation, and shared activities. From traditional practices and local livelihoods to cultural heritage and changing environments, these experiences connect learning with the knowledge and everyday lives of local people.

Environmental Education & Sustainable Learning

We work with educational institutions to connect curricula with real-world environmental and social issues. Through applied learning and field experiences, participants explore biodiversity, climate change, conservation, sustainable development, and indigenous knowledge.

Programs & Services

Our programs are tailored to the interests and needs of participating institutions. They may include:

  • Active Learning Modules: Exploring the connections between people, society, and the environment, alongside leadership and life skills.
  • Connecting with Soil and Communities: Learning about farming, local resources, traditional practices, and indigenous knowledge in everyday life.
  • Community-Based Studies: Exploring local culture, livelihoods, environmental change, and indigenous approaches to climate resilience.
  • Field Experiences & Outdoor Camps: Learning through guided walks, community visits, hands-on activities, cultural exchange, and time for personal exploration and reflection.

We also support curriculum development, learning module design and delivery, field experience planning and management, and outdoor camp coordination. Programs may include preparation before the field experience, activities in the field, and post-field discussion and sharing.

Learning through Exchange

We believe learning is a two-way exchange. Communities are not simply places to visit; they are hosts, practitioners, knowledge holders, and partners in the learning process.

Through our 4D approach — Display, Discussion, Documentation, and Dissemination — participants observe local practices, exchange perspectives, document their experiences, and share what they learn. Depending on the program, this may lead to short films, photo journals, reflection storybooks, reports, or other forms of documentation.

Our approach is guided by respect for cultural diversity, environmental responsibility, local knowledge, and a willingness to learn from and support others.
