Buddha and Buddhism

Buddhism in Nepal: Nepalese Buddhists believe that Buddhism is neither a religion nor an irrational faith, but a process of becoming a peaceful way of life or a science of living and viewing the world.

Nepal is a sacred land, a mosaic of different cultures. It serves as the focal point of the ancient trade route connecting the Indian subcontinent and the Tibetan autonomous region of China, a melting pot of Buddhist and Eastern philosophies, as well as a meeting place for the two main religions, Hinduism and Buddhism, which developed between the highly populated nations of China and India. Nepal boasts a reputation for peace and diverse natural elevations, functioning as both an ethnic melting pot and an ecological hotspot. Over the years, this blend of natural and ethnic diversity has cultivated a unique cultural heritage in Nepal, featuring ancient temples that date back to the first century, constructed using local knowledge and resources that have withstood the test of time and various natural disasters. These tangible and intangible heritages include crafts, art, and architecture.  These now serve as a source of inspiration, a centre of knowledge, and a marvel that attracts tourists, researchers, and wanderers eager to witness and learn.

Apart from this, Buddhism occupies the most eminent position in Nepal. Buddhists play a significant role in making Nepalese culture glorious. As Swayambhu Jyoti originated in the Kathmandu Valley, so too did the civilisation of Nepal. After the emanation of Swayambhu Jyoti, Adi Buddhas and other Buddhas came to Nepal. Nepal is also widely recognised as the birthplace of the Shakyamuni Buddha. Following the influence of Buddhism, the people became increasingly drawn to the life and deeds of the Buddha and Bodhisattvas.
