Diversity Trails

Diversity Trails' travels vertically from lower to higher altitudes, illustrating Nepal's geographical and cultural diversity, from the southern plains, where the 'Light of Asia,' Lord Buddha, was born, to the world's highest peak, Mt. Everest.

The geographic boundary of Nepal extends from the southern flat plains of Terai to the sky-piercing peaks of the Himalayas in the north, ranging from 59m at Mukhiya Patti Musharna to 8,849m at Mt. Everest, the highest point on Earth, within a breadth of 200km. Such a dramatic elevation contributes to Nepal being a biodiversity hotspot and an ethnic melting pot. From Terai (59m to 305m), further north lies the Siwalik zone (700m – 1,500m), followed by the Mahabharat range (1,500m – 2,700m), which gives way to the Inner Terai valleys, such as Trijuga, Sindhuli, Chitwan, Dang, and Surkhet. The Midlands (600m – 3,500m) north of the Mahabharat range encompass the beautiful valleys of Kathmandu and Pokhara. The mountainous region begins at 3,000m, leading to alpine pastures and temperate forests, which are limited by the tree line at 4,000m and the snow line at 5,000m. The inner Himalayan valleys (above 3,600m), such as Mustang and Dolpo, are cold deserts that share topographical characteristics with the Tibetan plateau.

The 2021 Census recorded a population of 28 million, representing 125 castes and over 101 ethnic groups speaking 123 languages and dialects, making Nepal one of the most culturally diverse countries. Since ancient times, indigenous communities have inhabited specific geographies in harmony with nature, preserving their languages and distinct cultural practices, along with a close attachment to ancestral territories and natural resources.

Nepal embodies the syncretism of Hinduism and Buddhism. Across the hills and mountains, the landscape is rich with shrines of various faiths and religions, coexisting harmoniously with nature and one another. The Buddhist monasteries that murmur prayers of peace and tranquillity high in the Himalayas translate into a resonant recitation of Sanskrit slokas in the temples of the mid-hills and river valleys.
