Mountain Programs
The total area of Nepal is 147,516 km2, out of which the mountain area covers 51,817 square kilometres. The Himalayas hold special significance for Nepal and the Nepalese. The mountains of Nepal make the biggest contribution to the country’s economy by serving as major tourist attractions. Not only do these mountains possess aesthetic and economic value, but the water resources originating from them have for ages fulfilled the region's year-round water needs and nourished life, culture, and civilisation.
These mountains of Nepal, long glorified as the tallest and most beautiful in the world, now face the tragedy of being highly vulnerable to the effects of climate change. The Himalayas have already shown early signs of climate change; scientific studies predict more severe impacts on our mountains in the future. With emerging threats of climate change, environmental degradation, and economic decline, our mountains and their resources are at serious risk. Science has recently highlighted that mountain regions in Nepal, also known as the Third Pole and Water Tower of Asia, are heavily impacted by climate change and pose a significant danger of natural disasters. The inhabitants of these areas are highly dependent on nature and natural resources for survival. The possible collapse of these mountains would not only greatly affect mountain communities but also impact the entire region. The increasing threat of Glacier Lake outburst floods, caused by unseasonal rainfall, has jeopardised the lifestyles of mountain communities, which rely heavily on agriculture, animal husbandry, and tourism. The environment is of utmost importance; its conservation and management are essential to help communities live and sustain life. Despite contributing no negative impact to the environment or climate change, mountain communities remain among the most vulnerable to its adverse effects, with risks of loss of human life and livelihood institutions. And local communities have underscored the impacts of global warming and rising temperatures.
